Females: 3 days

Notes

Important: Therapy

  • Samples should be taken prior to starting treatment.
  • Send blood for culture if pyrexial.
  • Send MSSU (carefully collected to avoid contamination.)

Uncomplicated Lower UTI - first line

Trimethoprim oral 200mg 12 hourly

Uncomplicated Lower UTI - 2nd line

Nitrofurantoin oral modified release 100mg 12 hourly OR immediate release 50mg 6 hourly 

Important: Notes

  • Consider specialist referral for recurrent infection.
  • Results of laboratory cultures and sensitivities usually available after overnight incubation.
  • If culture results indicate sensitivity to ‘tetracycline’ then oxytetracycline (less expensive in primary care) or tetracycline should be considered. Doxycycline is inappropriate due to low renal excretion.
  • In patients with CKD3 or above and/or those at risk of hyperkalaemia these agents may be unsuitable.  Please check current prescribing advice as per BNF and seek specialist advice if alternative agent required.
